A Myriad of Errors and Faulty Logic

In the debate between Joe Karam and Michael Laws which was broadcast on RadioLive on 6 August 2010, Karam committed a number of errors and displayed some faulty logic.  Karam characteristically puts forward his ideas in an earnest and demanding manner often talking over or interrupting Laws.  It is clear from his delivery that he truly believes what he says.

The errors we found are as follows:

  1. Joe Karam will have us know that the normal full bladder for a human being is 3-4 litres.  The correct answer is 600-800 ml.  A full explanation can be found here.
  2. He asserted that Constable Andrews said that David Bain hit is head when he fainted.  This was not the case.
  3. He also stated that a prosecution witness said that it was possible for the washing machine cycle to finish in time for the police to arrive if David Bain had put it on after he arrived back.  There is no evidence for this
  4. Karam stated that the Prosecution gave no explanation for the blood on Robin's hands.  This is incorrect too

The faulty logic is as follows:

  1. If there is some hearsay evidence and it incriminates Robin Bain then it should be accepted.  If it incriminates David Bain then it can be explained away with some innocent behaviour.
  2. The blood on Robin's hands was too insignificant to test but Karam thinks that it wasn't tested for some sinister reason and that if it had been tested then it would have been shown to not be his blood.  But, Joe, it was too small to test and so no result can be found and certainly there was not enough blood on his hands for him to have been wearing those blood soaked gloves!

While it is acceptable and quite normal for people to make mistakes but too often, Karam has allowed people to accept his mistakes at face value and makes little attempt to retract them when corrected, especially if the mistakes promote belief in his point of view.  This is not only true of his verbal representations but also in his books.
